Col. Dr. Abdullah Almatrouk

Forensic Laboratory and Applied Field Officer
Ministry of Interior, Kuwait

I had a great interest in the field of forensic sciences, since I started working in the Crime Scene Department (2008-2012). Working in the crime scene exposed me to different fields of forensic sciences, such as Forensic Toxicology, Forensic Medicine, DNA, firearms and tool marks, Analytical Chemistry. A Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Genetics from Leeds University, and Imperial College London, respectively, provided me with a solid background about the molecular aspects of forensic science. However, after being transferred into the Forensic Laboratory department I developed an interest in the chemistry aspects of forensic science. This made me earn an additional Master’s degree in Forensic Science (Chemistry tract) from Towson University in the USA. In addition, a PhD in Biochemistry from The University of Maryland Baltimore County, made me interested in research after publishing two papers in Molecular Biology at that time. Therefore, I started conducting research in the field of Forensic Science and more specifically about narcotics and psychotropic substances in Kuwait. Having strong background knowledge in molecular biology and a good experience in forensic chemistry made me further explore the area of pharmacogenetics and its applications in forensic sciences. This interest, background knowledge and experience, encouraged me to collaborate with others and publish two articles in pharmacogenetics.
