Assistant Commissioner McLean is the incoming AFP Commander Europe, Africa and Middle East based at the Australian High Commission, London.

Assistant Commissioner McLean was formerly Chief of Staff responsible for the coordination of information, administrative and support services to AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw APM, including Strategic Communications (media and public affairs) and Professional Standards (internal investigations).
Prior to that role in July 2020, Assistant Commissioner McLean was Assistant Commissioner People and Safety responsible for strategic workforce planning, industrial relations, recruitment, organisational health and workplace health and safety.

During 2019, Assistant Commissioner McLean was Commander New South Wales responsible for the delivery of Australian Federal Police outcomes, services and partnerships in the state of New South Wales.
Previous senior executive roles performed by Assistant Commissioner McLean include Commander Child Protection and Cyber Operations and Deputy Chief Police Officer, Australian Capital Territory Policing responsible for emergency first response, community policing, road safety and criminal investigations in the Australian Capital Territory.

From 2004 to 2007, Assistant Commissioner McLean served in Washington DC as the AFP Senior Liaison Officer responsible for cooperation with the United States and Canada on policing issues.
Assistant Commissioner McLean is a graduate of the AFP Management of Serious Crime Program, the AFP International Senior Command Program and the Australian Institute of Police Management.
He holds a Bachelor of Business and a Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership.
