Detective Superintendent Tim Stainton joined the AFP in 2009 after working as a Lawyer for several years. Since joining the AFP, Tim has worked in Organised Crime, Money Laundering, Fraud and Anti-Corruption, International Operations, as well as in AFP Headquarters in Canberra.
Tim is currently in charge of the AFP led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3) in Sydney. The JPC3 was launched in March 2022 and brings together the capabilities from across State and Territory law enforcement, Commonwealth Government agencies, and the Australian Private Sector to coordinate and support Australia’s policing response to Cybercrime. The JPC3 utilises the powers, experience, investigative and intelligence capabilities of all Australian policing jurisdictions and international law enforcement partners to inflict maximum impact on high harm high volume cybercrime affecting the Australian community. The JPC3’s core functions include criminal investigations, target development and disruption, intelligence sharing and Prevention and Community Outreach.
Tim has been involved in leading two of the AFP’s biggest investigations in recent years and has worked extensively with many foreign law enforcement partners including in the United Arab Emirates, The Netherlands, China, the United Kingdom and the United States. Tim has received two Commissioner’s citations for Conspicuous Conduct for his investigative work as well as an overseas service medal for his work on the Malaysian Airlines (MH17) crash investigation in The Netherlands. Tim was Team Leader of Operation Veyda, one of Australia’s most significant organised crime investigations targeting transnational crime syndicates committing large scale drug, money laundering and tobacco importation offences. For this work, Tim was awarded the AFP Commissioner’s Medal of Excellence.
Between 2018 and 2022, Tim was the AFP’s Liaison Officer based in Dubai, UAE, and had responsibility for Australian law enforcement engagement and operations in the Arabian Gulf and worked extensively with foreign law enforcement agencies and other Australian Government partners to combat transnational organised crime.
